Home cleaning service options
You spend 40-60 hours away from your home and on your day off would like to clean the house to a respectable level, but there are errands to run, children who need to go places and you need rest. The decision has been made to hire help to clean the house, who do you hire. Start by asking your friends if they hire help or know of a cleaning person or a Maid Service that they trust. Always ask for references, your home is a large investment so take care. I am an independent cleaning business and I don't take on any clients that don't have a referral from someone I trust, this is for my safety as much as for my clients.
Services provided:
Vacuuming, dusting, cleaning glass surfaces (including knick-knacks).
Scrubbing sinks, tubs, and toilets. Cleaning mirrors and counter surfaces.
Mopping floors, cleaning microwaves (inside and out), outside surface of stove and refrigerator, polish cabinets, spot clean windows and patio doors.
Dust baseboards, window sills and cobweb removal. (if a ladder isn't needed)
Tips on what to look for in a cleaning person, look down at their work shoes, are the toes scuffed, chances are then your cleaner is a keeper. You have to be on your knees for this job. Ask your cleaning person if they pick up the rugs and pet bowls off the floor, or do you the home owner need to do this before the cleaner comes over. Extra services may include cleaning the inside of the refrigerator, vacuuming or washing drapes, changing linen, doing laundry, cleaning light fixtures and chandeliers for an extra fee.
What will you pay for these services? The independent home cleaner charges by the hour. Expect to pay between £15-£30 an hour, depending on your location. Some independent cleaners also bring their own equipment and cleaning supplies. You also need to think about how often you would like your home cleaned. Bi-weekly is the most popular, followed by weekly, monthly or even one-time cleaning. Usually the independent home cleaner is not insured or bonded which can be bad if something breaks.

Not insured to much of a risk for you, there are the franchised Maid Services, who offer the same basic services that the independent cleaner offers. They are bonded and insured for theft and breakage. They charge by the size of your home, how frequent they service your home and if you have pets and other mess making things. They usually come to your home in teams of two, ask if you can have the same team every time you have a cleaning. They also have their own cleaning supplies and equipment.
Payment is paid at the time of the service, or as pre-arranged by the company or independent. You are not required to be home at the time of cleaning, but if you are that's O.K. also. Arrangements are made by you the home owner and your cleaning person on how to handle the key to the home.
"Sorry I don't do windows," usually a home cleaning service does not provide window cleaning, but some will do it for an additional fee. For this chore a professional window cleaning service is a good choice. They have the correct equipment for the job and usually take less time then a non- professional, therefore saving you money. Things to ask for: will they open the windows and clean sill and tracks. What about the screens are they going to be just wiped off or scrubbed clean. Are they going to be using ladders or using poles, using a ladder makes for a cleaner window. Expect to pay $250.00 and up for an average home, inside and out with screens cleaned.
Let's look down at the carpet, did Fido walk in with his muddy paws or the kids wipe their cheeto fingers on the carpet. Whether or not any of this happens carpets should be cleaned every 6 month or at the very least once a year. There are several ways to go about this. I would recommend a professional, the method used most often is the truck mount steam cleaning.
Again you can go with the franchise or an independent, but whomever you choose get references. Prices are quoted by the square foot, usually $0.10-$0.15, but this depends on your location. Another popular cleaning method is the dry foam extraction, use the professional, the dry foam-in-a-can sold in stores is discouraged. This method is a dryer method, so you can be on your carpet sooner. Scientific studies show it is effective in removing dust mite allergen and mold allergen. Dry foam extraction in my area is hard to find. There is always the do-it-yourself method of rental steamers. These are fine for the in-between cleaning spills.
Things to ask your carpet cleaner: if you have pets, do they have pet odor control methods of cleaning. Will my furniture be replaced and put on pads. And can I have a free estimate.
Now that your house is cleaned, your windows sparkle and your carpet is drying, go out and have a nice dinner and relax.
